Francesca Michielin (Italy)

Francesca Michielin was born in Bassano del Grappa in 1995.  This young Italian singer rose to fame after winning the fifth series of the show Italian X Factor.  Her debut single “Distratto” was released as a digital download EP.  On 12 January 2012, the song debuted at number one on the Italian Singles Chart.



Subsonica (Italy)

This week featuring Italy


The group was formed in 1996 in Turin, Italy. Their eponymous debut album debuted at the end of 1996. The band gained real success in 2000 by playing the Sanremo Music Festival.  The first two singles off of the album Microchip Emozionale, Tutti I Miei Sbagli and Discoteca Labirinto were hits. Their latest album, Eden was released in 2011.


Renato Carosone (Italy)

Renato Carosone (3 January 1920 – 20 May 2001), was the original singer of the song “Tu Vuò Fà L’Americano” which was remixed into “We No Speak Americano” by Yolanda Be Cool and became a worldwide sensation in 2011 becoming the #1 single in over 26 countries.  The original version was a single in 1956 in Italy.  Both versions of this song are great and I posted both videos for you to enjoy.

Verdena (Italy)

Verdena is an alternative rock band that formed in 1995 in Albino, Bergamo.  Alberto (vocals and guitar) and Luca Ferrari (drums) and brothers, together with bassist Roberta Sammarelli they formed Verdena.  In 1999 they released their album Verdena, they had success in Italy and received airplay on MTV.  The band released four more albums, the latest being Wow in 2011.  Most of their songs are sung in Italian except for some covers.

The Miles Apart (Italy)

They are an Italian punk band, from Cattolica, Italy. The band members are: Marco, Stefano, Lele and Luca.  The Miles Apart formed in February 2000, after Eversor (the band in which Lele and Marco played for 10 years) split-up. The musical style of the band is a mixture of melodies and rocking parts. From march 2005 they have a new guitar player (Stefano) and for the first time are a four piece band.  The above video is the single “One in a Million” off of their 2005 album Arm Me for Sunday.



Dope Stars Inc. (Italy)

This Italian alternative rock band formed in Rome in 2002.  The band released their debut album Neuromance in 2005 and were awarded “Newcomer of the Month” award by Orkus and Sonic Seducer magazines.  In 2006 the band released Gighearts, a single from this album was featured on the soundtrack for the movie Saw lV, this gave the audience a more mainstream audience.In 2009 21st Century Slave was released and in 2011 they released Ultrawired.  Ultrawired won the Rockerilla award for Best Album of 2011.

Alternative Music from Italy

This week I will feature music from Italy.  The 60’s brought Rock and Roll to Italy, in the 80’s Italy boasted one of the most vibrant thrash metal, hardcore music scenes.  In the 90’s and 2000’s progressive and alternative rock emerged and Italy now has a vibrant alternative rock scene.  This week I will feature some of those great musicians that Italy has to offer.
