Wiidakko (Finland)

This week featuring Finland

Wiidakko formed in 2003 in Lahti, they are an alternative rock band.  They released four self-released albums before being signed and releasing their debut album Uusi järjestys (New Order) in 2006.  In 2008 they released their second album  Asiat joita et voi koskaan saavuttaa (things that can never be achieved) and their self titled third album was released 2011.  The band does not sing in English, so I don’t understand any of what they are singing about but they have a wonderful alternative/indie sound.

Korina Kitten Riot (Finland)

This week featuring Finland

Just to prove that Finland is not all about heavy music, here is a great Indie artist.  From Helsinki musician Antti Reikko goes by the moniker Korina Kitten Riot.  Reikko is best known as the lead singer and guitarist for the group Johnny Superhero.  In 2006 Reikko established KKR to have an outlet for his more gentle acoustic songs.  He released his first album in 2009 on a close-to-zero budget playing everything himself except for drums and trombone.  His new album “Highs and Lows” is due for release early next year.  The above video is a single from the new album.  KKR is currently on tour in Finland, so if you are there get out and see him!

Lodger is a Finnish alternative/indie band formed in 2002 in Helsinki.  Although they are largely unknown outside Finland, they have established a cult following on the internet due to their “flash music videos”.  In 2003 “Doorsteps” was chosen as the Best Finnish Music Video of that year.  It was designed by the bands lyricist Hannes Hayha.  Lodger has released four studio albums and it has been said they are working on a new album.  There is not a lot of information on this band but they are something different and interesting.

Apocalyptica (Finland)

This week featuring Finland

Apocalyptica is an extremely unique band formed in Helsinki in 1993.  The band is composed of three classically trained cellists and a drummer (no lead vocals).  In 1996 the band released their debut album which consisted solely of Metallica covers played on cellos.  Their second album in 1998 featured Metallica covers as well as various other bands covers.  Apocalyptica has released seven more albums which contain original material, covers and some lead vocals of singers such as Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace and Corey Taylor of Slipknot.  Their latest album “7th Symphony” featured the guest vocals of Gavin Rossdale of Bush.  This is a creative band melding different genres and creating a heavy hybrid style of their own.
